As part of the industry-wide sustainability initiative launched by Pietra Naturale Autentica, Bagnara and its American subsidiary Broad River Quarries partnered with the Politecnico di Torino to conduct a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Silver Cloud – the iconic American granite extracted in Georgia, USA.
The study examined the full value chain – from the extraction of the raw block in the quarry to the production of a 2 cm thick polished slab in Europe. The results are impressive:
Just 19.4 kg CO₂ equivalent per square meter – already below the emission values of many other common building materials.
In detail:
– 2.9 kg CO₂e from quarrying
– 7.9 kg CO₂e from overseas transport
– 8.6 kg CO₂e from slab production, primarily due to electricity consumption
These figures underscore not only the low environmental impact of natural stone in general, but also Silver Cloud’s strong position as a responsible choice for sustainable architecture.
With this LCA, we’ve identified further opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint by switching to renewable energy sources in both quarry and production facilities.
For domestic US projects, the environmental impact can be even further reduced by keeping processing and supply local – making Silver Cloud a compelling choice for those committed to building responsibly.
