During Marmomac 2026, Bagnara invites architects, designers and natural stone professionals to two workshops with geologist Mariachiara Zaffani in Cavaion Veronese. Origins of Stones and Families of Stones combine geological insight with practical material knowledge, revealing new perspectives on natural stone.
Every natural stone has a story to tell. Its minerals, crystals, structures, colours and veining are the result of geological processes that have unfolded over millions or even billions of years. Understanding these processes reveals not only the distinctive aesthetics of a stone, but also valuable information about its characteristics and potential applications.
With the Bagnara Workshop Series, we want to share this knowledge during Marmomac 2026. Together with our geologist Mariachiara Zaffani, we invite architects, designers and natural stone professionals to join us for two workshops at Bagnara in Cavaion Veronese.
Origins of Stones
A geological journey through time
Following its successful introduction last year, Origins of Stones returns with a new installation. The workshop uses geology and petrology as tools to explore the fascinating history behind natural stone.
A chronological selection of natural stones takes participants through key periods of Earth’s history, revealing how geological events and processes have shaped the materials we use in architecture and design today. The journey includes selected materials from the Bagnara Selection and the six key elements of the Filigrana collection, developed in collaboration with DRAW STUDIO.
Families of Stones
Recognising, understanding and choosing natural stone
With Families of Stones, Bagnara adds a new, practical perspective to the Workshop Series.
Before natural stone becomes a slab, worktop, piece of cladding or architectural element, it is a rock. Its mineralogical composition, structure and geological origin provide valuable clues to its characteristics.
Through observation and practical testing, the workshop explores different rock families and how natural stone can be read and interpreted. Participants will examine siliceous and calcareous stones, hardness and acid sensitivity, as well as the scientific and commercial classifications used to describe natural stone.
The same stone can be understood through different lenses: geology, market and design. Bringing these perspectives together creates a deeper understanding of the material and supports more informed choices for architecture and design.
Sharing knowledge. Understanding natural stone.
For Bagnara, true stone expertise means understanding a material in all its dimensions: its origin, its characteristics, its processing and its potential within a project.
Sharing this knowledge is part of our passion for natural stone and the expertise Bagnara has developed across the entire value chain for more than 70 years.
Two workshops. Two perspectives. One extraordinary material.
